Happy Birthday to the Internet

Where you on April 30, 1993?

Back in 1993 most of us had desk top computers no portable tablets.  Our cells phones were so large we put them in our briefcases not our pockets.  Here a a few more computer related first in 1993:

  • Supermicro was founded
  • Intel develops PPGA
  • IrDA was founded
  • PowerQuest was founded
  • PC game DOOM was released by ID Software

In just 20 years the industry has developed many new markets and products and users that can’t live without them.  What will the next 20 bring us is yet to be known but we sure have come along way from 1993.  So April 30, 2033 may seem like along ways away but 20 years goes fast!

IBM Flex System Manager

One of the most difficult tasks in terms of managing your business is figuring out how to handle your technology on a day-to-day basis. Actually, in today’s lightning-fast age of technology it is more like managing your business every second in real time.

Each time a business comes to us to look at the current status of their IT architecture, one of our primary focuses is “how do they handle a crisis?” Having worked with businesses of every size across the globe, one of the main things we have found is the lack of reaction speed when it comes to being notified of a potential issue or the lack of reaction speed after finding out what the issue is.

We look to IBM and their mobile Flex system manager in situations like this. Not only is the IBM Flex System Manager a free and simple mobile application, but it is available for Android, BlackBerry and Apple iOS. This makes the IBM Flex System Manager a critical tool for a business who needs flexibility and is often on the run.

Let’s take a look at three features we love from the IBM Flex System Manager:

Inventory management:

Inventory management is one of the key resources that differentiates IBM from the rest. Real-time inventory management becomes increasingly more important and more difficult to track and maintain. With IBM, inventory can be easily managed from your mobile device to keep up to date on where your stock is, along with important notifications.

Power actions:

This might seem like a simple feature, but IBM does it right. With the ability to perform virtual resets, view most recent jobs, or power on and off, you will be in full control of your business, even if you are working remotely off-site.

Authentication and security:

One of the most overlooked and important factors in any mobile application is security. Luckily when you work with IBM that issue can be put to rest. With IBM’s mobile application you will be able to manage connections across secure and persistent protocols such as SSL and make sure all credentials are secure on any mobile or remote device.

Setting the Foundation for Operating Systems

AIX or Advanced Interactive eXecutive, is a series of proprietary Unix operating systems that was originally released by IBM in 1986. IBM has been producing AIX versions ever since and continues to set the bar for operating systems. Continuously evolving through the 1990s, even becoming (in a slightly modified form) the standard operating system for the Apple Network Server Systems sold by Apple Computer. The most recent release of Version 7.1 came out in 2012 with an Open Beta program once again.

The extremely robust and scalable UNIX platform solution continues to provide a vast platform that can be implemented across a wide array of operating environments. If you are planning to sell products online or large-scale team collaboration over an intranet, you can’t go wrong with the AIX OS provided by IBM. It was the first operating system to support new IP Version 6 protocol providing increased security and additional IP addresses. The AIX OS also seamlessly integrates with key online technologies such as the Java Development Kit (JDK).

Security is always a key concern for businesses especially when it comes to data management of client or business assets being transferred online or via an intranet. The AIX OS has some top-notch security benefits that will keep your business assets safe and secure. The built-in network security features secure your intranets and extend that security over the internet using built-in network security features and effective system management solution. Additionally establishing operating procedures becomes even easier with access to open-source software tools and secure programing interfaces. Not to mention the flexibility and control options provided that can make sure you keep your data and information protected at all times.

The AIX OS allows you to leverage your existing IT systems and provides an adaptive platform that will keep your systems ready for the future. It continues to bridge the gap of the wide and ever-changing array of applications and operating environments that all companies need to navigate on a daily basis. The AIX Expansion Pack even contains additional tools such as Web servers that you will need if you decide to take your business online and turn it into an e-business.

With unmatched performance, easily integrated security features, broad application support, reliability and an optimized operating system environment, the IBM AIX OS is a must have to set the foundation for your business’s IT environment now and for the future.

Storage Virtualization – Quit Wasting Your Valuable Space

Quit Wasting Your Valuable Space

Storage systems in computing and data processing for businesses can be an overwhelming and difficult piece of your business to manage. Understanding the hardware and software components that make up your storage system can only be explained by your “IT guy” in most cases. The advanced functionality, security issues of data protection, storage capacity and reliability are only a few of the concepts to be aware of.

With IBM’s storage consolidation and virtualization services, you can reduce infrastructure complexity and costs while increasing asset utilization, overall storage capacity, and flexibility. Creating a storage strategy and overall architecture is made easy with IBM. Efficiently planning for consolidation and virtualization are best left to the experts in order to create an optimized and flexible storage environment. A basic knowledge of storage virtualization can help you get started.

Let’s take a quick look at the two primary types of virtualization that can occur:

File virtualization

File access is often provided using Common Internet File System (CIFS) or Network File System (NFS) protocols. There are many challenges that can occur with network-attached storage (NAS) systems. This virtualization eliminates the dependencies between where files are actually stored and data accessed at the file level.

Block virtualization

Block virtualization can be delivered over Internet Small Computer System Interface (iSCSI) Serial Attached SCSI (SAS), Fibre Channel (FC), or other protocols. It separates the logical storage from the physical storage in order to be accessed without regard to physical storage or heterogeneous structure. The flexibility created by this separate is extremely valuable for over end user storage management.

With storage virtualization the software or device providing the virtualization becomes the disk manager in the new storage environment. This provides advanced features such as Thin Provisioning and disk expansion and shrinking to maximize storage utilization.  IBM storage virtualization services can help manage this data and simplify storage management as well as reducing costs and current storage inefficiencies.

Working with an IBM storage specialist can virtualize your storage environment, consolidate unused or over-allocated space, and help you fully realize the additional benefits of storage virtualization.
