G/S Solutions has long provided technical services and data center assistance to the healthcare industry. Today, we look at an example of the scope of services provided to a healthcare system in western Michigan, spanning 11 hospitals, 173 ambulatory & service sites, a 615,000 member health plan, and 21,700 employees.
The relationship started about 8 years ago, with the health network looking for help supporting their unix environment and PSeries systems. G/S Solutions came on and provided an analysis of the environment & current utilization, and then built a roadmap. This was a strong plan to assist with future network design, implementation, and assets. The plan represented both a picture of the current environment, but also stressed performance and growth as the healthcare network intended to grow over time. The plan was designed to provide stable direction and high availability and functionality.
A core component to the plan was consolidation of support and equipment vendors, to drive better pricing and service levels, while at the same time, providing a more knowledgeable single point of support for the healthcare network operations team to work with. By consolidating and virtualizing PSeries servers as a part of the roadmap, the health network was able to reduce it's server footprint by 70 percent, reducing total rackspace by 156U. These power servers are running mission critical applications, including the electronic medical records system, and high availability was a key design component to the project.
ROI objectives on the project were met within 2 years, and included a 66% reduction in annual maintenance costs, as well as an 83% reduction in power and cooling costs.
Ongoing implementation and system support emphasizes knowledge transfer to the existing server operations team. This support approach for AIX and PSeries helps the healthcare network operations team grow in capability, while at the same time, providing quick response to issues as they may occur.
G/S has really helped us meet our growth objectives through the years. They’ve shown great skill with implementation work, and then always go the extra mile to ensure my team has a solid understanding of how to work with the technologies that have been implemented. This has improved the both capabilities and performance of my server team and data center.
